Under the Coastal Management Act 2016, councils must prepare a Coastal Management Program (CMP) to guide long-term, coordinated management of the coast.

CMPs identify local coastal challenges, outline the actions needed to address them, and explain how and when these actions will take place. They also include costs, funding options, and cost-sharing arrangements.

CMP development is a 5 stage process (as the diagram below outlines).

Stage 1 update: Scoping Study

The scoping stage involved collecting and reviewing existing information, identifying key stakeholders and mapping future engagement, determining knowledge gaps, identifying studies that are needed, and developing a forward plan.

What's next? Stage 2-4

This next phases focus on: determining risks, vulnerabilities and opportunities; identifying and evaluating options; and preparing, exhibiting, finalising, certifying and adopting the CMP.
