Georges River estuary health improves amidst freshwater challenges

The 2023–2024 Georges River Report Card reveals a mixed ecological picture for Sydney’s iconic waterway. While the estuary's health has improved, the freshwater sections have experienced a slight decline.

The estuary received an A– grade, up from a B in 2021–22, attributed to reduced turbidity and limited rainfall during sampling, leading to better water clarity and quality. Conversely, the freshwater reaches were graded C+, down from B–, with heavy rainfall and flooding introducing sediments and pollutants, affecting water quality and macroinvertebrate diversity.

Notably, even pristine bushland subcatchments like O’Hares Creek and Mill Creek saw declines, likely due to the wet season washing sensitive organisms downstream. Urban subcatchments, including Cabramatta and Prospect Creeks, faced challenges from increased runoff and pollution.

The Georges Riverkeeper team conducted extensive sampling across 51 sites to assess the river's ecological health. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring and community engagement in preserving the river's health.
