A new chapter in litter prevention for the Georges River

Georges Riverkeeper has secured NSW Environment Protection Authority funding to implement the Georges River Litter Prevention Roadmap over the next three years.

The funding, awarded through the EPA’s Stream 3 Litter Prevention Grants Program, is an exciting milestone for our organisation and for the future health of the Georges River.

The grant will support us to turn our Georges River Litter Prevention Roadmap into action across the catchment, working with our member councils, communities and partners to reduce litter at its source.

A key part of the project will be the creation of a new Litter Prevention Officer role at Georges Riverkeeper. This dedicated role will coordinate implementation of the Roadmap and help build the partnerships, knowledge and practical initiatives needed to prevent litter from entering our waterways in the first place.

This marks an important evolution in Georges Riverkeeper's work.

In the last financial year, our organisation and partners removed more than 112 tonnes of litter from the catchment's waterways and foreshores. While this is a significant achievement, the ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of litter that needs to be removed.

"We don't just want to get better at cleaning up litter. We want to be more proactive by stopping litter at the source," said Georges Riverkeeper's Program Manager, Nell Graham.

The Litter Prevention Roadmap provides a shared direction for achieving this, identifying opportunities for coordinated action across the Georges River catchment.

Over the next three years, this NSW EPA funding will help Georges Riverkeeper take that direction from roadmap to reality.

It's an important investment in a cleaner, healthier, more liveable Georges River catchment, and we're excited to get started.
